Prioritize by traffic × decay velocity × competitive pressure. Then choose light (stats), medium (new section), or heavy (rewrite). Measure after, including citations.
Not every refresh is a rewrite. Most are not. The mistake is to apply a heavy rewrite to a page that only needed a stat update, because you burn the time you should have spent on the page that actually needed the rewrite. Prioritize by traffic multiplied by decay velocity multiplied by competitive pressure — a high-traffic page losing rank fast to a competitor who just added information gain is the top of the queue. Read the table as a decision tree, not a menu. Light refreshes are weekly hygiene on stat-heavy pages. Medium refreshes happen when you notice a new question-shaped sub-query in the SERP or the answer engines that your page does not answer. Heavy refreshes are rare and should be rare — if you are doing heavy rewrites every week, you are publishing the wrong things the first time. Measure after every refresh, including citations, not just rankings; a refresh that lifts traffic but kills citations is a net loss in 2026.
Snippet recovery is a special case of medium: the SERP wants a definition or a list and you are not providing it in an extractable shape.
